Grammar

X

It’s common place to say that such and such person has “perfect English” (or French, or Italian, etc.) – an enviable common place. The perfection normally comes from the accuracy with which the user handles that language. Grammatical accuracy, the surgical precision by which a connoisseur of sophisticated grammar structures can express shades of meaning makes the difference between a regular speaker and en elite one. Thus, anyone who really wants to impress by their impeccable use of a language will polish their grammar. Are you already part of that elite group?

Conversation

X

Many people talk, few can really make conversation, and fewer still can make it in another language. Being fluent, being interesting, having a wide vocabulary range, being witty and courteous and aware, knowing when to listen, when to ask questions, when to go on speaking and how to interrupt, in short, knowing how to carry on playing the elegant tennis of the art of conversation – these are the conversational skills you can equip yourself with in order to become a charming conversationalist. Are you already one of those few?

English through movies

X

It is a proven fact that in countries where Anglo-Saxon films are dubbed (Hungary, Spain), the population’s general English level is lower than in countries where movies are subtitled (Romania, Portugal). And when we give up subtitles too, and we manage to watch the movie in its original version, we have every chance to see our English level “rocket”. Learning English through films implies delighting in lexical fineries and using that vocabulary yourself, appropriately, in your own English: trendy buzzwords, cool phrases, smart jokes, clever lines. Are you ready to join the feast?

5 o’clock tea @ih_bucharest

They say that the famous 5 o’clock tea routine appeared due to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, who used to have tea before dinner, together with friends, having some rolls with butter, cookies and different types of biscuits. But there are only a few who know that, in fact, tea appeared for the first time in Asia and that the Dutch were among the first Europeans to import major quantities of tea..
International House Bucharest invites you every Friday, at 5 o’clock, to have tea together and to debate various subjects, of course in English and/or Romanian for foreigners.

Conversation club in English

X

A good chat is like a light rain in spring: it gives you energy, it puts a smile on your face and it inspires you. Under the umbrella-topic you and your interlocutors choose freely (anything, from sports to psychology, from origami to algorithms), you find out information, oddities and new things, while you too share knowledge, dilemmas, disbeliefs, certainties. When does harmony between interlocutors arise? When does friendship get born? When do you start feeling the sheer joy of having a good chat with like-minded people? You don’t even realise…

Conversation club in Romanian for foreigners

X

Doing Romanian grammar or vocabulary exercises can become a slightly annoying task: at an ant’s pace, you sometimes risk losing sight of the pleasure and joys of the complete route. That’s why joining a conversation club in Romanian is like “taking off” straight to the topics that interest you: whether you’re passionate about automobiles or ikebana, a lover of good recipes or of cult films, the conversation flies you to sheer communication, across shared ideas, opinions, feelings and insights. Are you ready for boarding?
